Fred the Red Frog lived in a flowerbed near the backdoor steps of Chef Robert St. John’s childhood home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He was there when the boy left the house and always greeted him on his return. Years later Fred lived on in bedtime stories that St. John told his daughter and son. In these stories, Fred— ever the mischievous adventurer— and a boy named Bobby travelled to school, church, a tree house in the woods, a nearby lake, and the record store. But the greatest adventure of all was when Fred made a trip to the grocery store in search of his favorite treat— chocolate-covered flies. This is that tale!
